DAVOS, Switzerland – Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, the President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, participated in the World Economic Forum this week alongside health and global leaders. They discussed pressing issues affecting countries worldwide.
On Wednesday, Dr. Farrugia was part of a panel that focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its role in healthcare. The session was titled “Cracking the Code of Digital Health.”
Dr. Farrugia highlighted that Mayo Clinic currently uses 320 different AI algorithms. Essentially, an algorithm is a set of digital instructions designed to perform specific tasks. He noted that one of the biggest challenges in integrating AI into healthcare is outdated systems that can’t keep up with new technology.
“We need to rethink and build new systems,” Dr. Farrugia stressed. “If we fail to do this now, we’re missing a vital opportunity as a society. Personally, I believe AI can greatly enhance healthcare outcomes.”
He shared an example of how Mayo Clinic has successfully implemented AI to improve echocardiograms, which help in diagnosing and treating patients in developing nations. For instance, nurses in Nigeria have used this technology to reduce maternal mortality rates. Additionally, algorithms have been adapted to aid in diagnosing children in Peru.
Patient trust and safety are also essential components of AI in healthcare. “We must build trust and clearly define what that means,” said Dr. Farrugia. He advocates for partnerships between private and public sectors to create assurance labs that validate AI tools. In Mayo Clinic’s case, they refer to this process as “Validate.”
Recently, Mayo Clinic also launched a Digital Pathology Platform aimed at improving research and analyzing clinical data more effectively.
