Approximately 58% of those surveyed believe U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has gone too far in its actions against immigrants. This sentiment is particularly strong among Democrats, with about 90% expressing concern. Even some Republicans and independents share these feelings, indicating a broadening discontent with the current approach.
The poll was conducted amid rising tensions after recent violent encounters involving immigration agents. For instance, in Minneapolis, two U.S. citizens were killed during protests against immigration raids. These incidents have sparked national debates about the role and methods of ICE.
Historically, immigration has been a contentious issue in American politics. Trump has consistently advocated for strict immigration policies, claiming they are necessary for national security. However, as the landscape changes, public opinion appears to be pushing back against such measures.
Interestingly, despite his falling approval ratings, Trump’s Republican Party still leads over Democrats on immigration issues. Some 37% of respondents believe Republicans have a better approach, compared to 32% who favor Democrats.
