According to Professor Matthew Fitzpatrick, “By 2080, cities in the Northern Hemisphere will start feeling like those closer to the equator.” He notes that this shift means it will be harder to find climates that match our current ones. For example, areas in Southern Florida could mimic climates found today in Central America or North Africa. There’s little that currently exists on Earth that matches what these places will become.
The interactive app developed by the Maryland team helps users visualize future climates by comparing them to current climates of different cities. Based on how much greenhouse gas we emit, users can explore various scenarios—from optimistic to dire.
Recent data shows that if we stick to the Paris Agreement, the future could be less severe. For instance, in a low-emissions scenario, a city like Bordeaux could feel like modern-day Bredan in Spain—just a little warmer and not overly dry. However, in a high-emission world, Bordeaux might resemble a hot and dry Rignano Garganico in Italy, with temperatures skyrocketing by over 5°C.
These comparisons highlight a crucial reality: the choices we make today—how we consume energy and our collective action towards environmental issues—will greatly influence the climate for future generations. Our environment and comfort depend on our decisions now.
