Florida has become a challenging landscape for Democrats. Since 2012, they haven’t won a Senate race in the state. Trump secured a significant victory in Florida in 2024, winning by 13 points, and Marco Rubio was re-elected in 2022 with nearly 58% of the votes.
Vindman, a retired lieutenant colonel and Iraq War veteran, testified about Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine for political gain. This moment marked a key point in the impeachment saga. He aims to challenge GOP Senator Ashley Moody, who was appointed after Rubio became Secretary of State. The upcoming special election in November will decide who fills the remainder of Rubio’s term. Vindman criticizes Moody for aligning too closely with Trump and special interests, suggesting she’s not truly representing Floridians.
Vindman faces a competitive Democratic primary on August 18. Other candidates include Jennifer Jenkins, who made a notable victory in a school board race, Hector Mujica from Google’s philanthropy team, and state Rep. Angie Nixon.
