“Wonderful ambassadors for local food pantries.” That’s how Susan Kiernan, the Director of the Hingham Food Pantry, described the Stand Up Speak Out group in her letter of appreciation for our recent food drive.
This initiative marks a big win for SUSO, a community activist group that meets every Wednesday in Hingham Square. Our mission is simple: address the urgent needs of our neighbors in Hull, Hingham, and Weymouth and take action to help.
During November and December, we organized a food drive where we collected donations of food, toiletries, gift cards, and cash. These contributions went to the Wellspring Multi-Service Center in Hull, the Weymouth Food Pantry, and the Hingham Food Pantry.
We are grateful to the local businesses and organizations that supported us by hosting food drop boxes:

Thanks to the generosity of patrons, customers, and SUSO members, we were able to raise:

GIFT CARDS: $635
FOOD and TOILETRIES: 55 shopping bags
In a heartfelt message, Pat Martin, Vice President of Programming at Wellspring, thanked us, saying, “Your gifts have helped us keep food on the table for many during this uncertain time.”
At SUSO, we believe that helping others helps us too. These actions reflect key values that unite us: democracy, free speech, and the right to a decent life. Ensuring everyone has food on their tables is just the start.
A recent study found that 1 in 10 Americans experience food insecurity, highlighting the importance of community support efforts like ours. Experts claim that local initiatives can significantly reduce these rates, showcasing the power of grassroots activism.
