Reincubate, the company behind Camo, is taking Apple to court. They claim Apple copied their technology and acted unfairly. Camo allows users to turn their iOS or Android phones into web cameras for Macs or PCs.
Camo launched in 2020, gaining popularity quickly. But two years later, Apple introduced its own version, called Continuity Camera. This feature only works with Apple devices, which Reincubate says puts them at a disadvantage. They argue that Apple used its control over the App Store to steer users away from Camo.
According to Reincubate’s lawsuit, many Apple employees used Camo, and Apple initially supported it. But when Camo started getting attention, Apple changed its strategy. They copied key features and weakened Camo’s functionality, making it harder for Reincubate to compete.
Aidan Fitzpatrick, the CEO of Reincubate, expressed frustration in a blog post. He noted how Apple encouraged their growth at first, stating that “thousands of staff” used Camo before Apple launched its own feature. Fitzpatrick was taken aback, believing Apple would have a more user-focused approach, especially considering how video communication needs surged during the pandemic.
He points out that even now, many Windows webcams outperform those on MacBooks. This raises a broader concern—are developers like Reincubate allowed to innovate, or will major tech companies continue to squash competition in favor of their own products?
This situation isn’t unique. Historically, smaller companies often clash with giants over intellectual property and market access. According to a recent survey, around 25% of tech startups report facing similar issues with larger competitors. These challenges highlight what many see as the need for a more balanced playing field in the tech industry.
As Reincubate pushes forward with their lawsuit, the outcome could influence how tech giants interact with smaller developers. It sparks conversation about the future of innovation and competition in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
