Olivia Wilde’s ‘The Invite’: Sundance Sensation Acquired by A24!

After a competitive bidding war, Olivia Wilde’s latest film, “The Invite,” has found a home with A24. This relationship comedy sparked interest from various buyers but ultimately led to a deal reported to be over $12 million.

Wilde teamed up once again with Megan Ellison’s Annapurna, the studio behind her directorial debut, “Booksmart.” The sale was facilitated by UTA Independent Film Group and FilmNation.

Wilde is advocating for a traditional theatrical release for “The Invite,” which features an impressive cast, including Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz, and Edward Norton. The film centers on a couple facing relationship troubles, who discover their upstairs neighbors have an unusual lifestyle. The script, a remake of the Spanish film “The People Upstairs,” was written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack.

So far, the sales market at Sundance has seen slower activity this year, with other films like the conversion therapy thriller “Leviticus” and a fantasy comedy named “Wicker” also generating buzz.

“The Invite” is Wilde’s third directorial project, following “Booksmart” and “Don’t Worry Darling.” She made headlines at Sundance this year for another film, “I Want Your Sex,” alongside Cooper Hoffman.

Critics are already buzzing about “The Invite.” Variety’s chief film critic, Owen Gleiberman, described it as a “bravura dinner-party dramedy” that keeps audiences laughing while delivering surprises.

The film’s success aligns with recent trends in the industry. According to a recent report, films featuring diverse casts and perspectives are gaining traction, influencing both production choices and viewer preferences. A study by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that movies with women directors are more likely to include women in lead roles. This may suggest a shift in how stories are told and by whom, making “The Invite” a timely entry in the world of film.

In summary, Olivia Wilde’s “The Invite” holds promise as a fresh and engaging take on modern relationships, further showcasing her ability to captivate both audiences and critics alike.
