Join the Friends of the Arcata Marsh for a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary this Saturday at 2 p.m. Meet leader Ren Bunce in the lobby of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk, rain or shine. Ren will share the area’s history and introduce you to the local plants and birds.
If you’re an early bird, the Redwood Region Audubon Society is hosting a field trip from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on the same day. Grab your binoculars and meet trip leader Larry Karsteadt at Klopp Lake, located at the end of South I Street. Enjoy stunning views of Humboldt Bay and the diverse birdlife along the easy trails.
This Sunday, dig into a delicious pancake breakfast at the Freshwater Grange from 8 to 11 a.m. Choose from buttermilk or whole-grain pancakes, paired with ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, and more. It’s just $10 for adults and $7 for kids. It’s a tasty way to support your community!
Looking for some evening fun? Head to the Moose Lodge for a dance party every Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Get ready to groove to live music for just $9. And if you love games, join the Bingo night at the same venue every Tuesday. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the first game starting at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds help local causes.
The “A Reason to Listen” poetry event happens on February 5 at 7 p.m. at Septentrio’s Barrel Room. Featured poet Milo Starr Johnson will read from her new book, “Miss Experience White.” Enjoy music by DJ Goldylocks and live art by Dre Meza. Open mic will be available with sign-ups from 6:30 p.m. Admission is $7 at the door.
If you’re into crafts, check out the Humboldt Handweavers and Spinners Guild meeting on February 12 at 6:45 p.m. at the Wharfinger Building. It’s free and open to everyone. Bellamy Devine will introduce smocking, a unique embroidery technique. Bellamy has a degree in studio arts from Cal Poly Humboldt and has received accolades for her creative work.
Finally, the California Native Plant Society is hosting a family-friendly walk on January 31 from 1 to 2 p.m. starting at the Sequoia Park fountain. This walk will focus on “Invasive Plants & Redwood Forest Ecology.” Learn how certain plants disrupt local ecosystems and the importance of removing them. Kids will even get a chance to take home a free native plant! This event is co-sponsored with the Sequoia Park Zoo.
