Let’s Hold Micron Accountable: A Call to Action for Environmental Promises

Climate change is a pressing issue, and it’s vital that we act now. Climate Change Awareness & Action, Inc. (CCAA) is a group focused on educating people and promoting actions to combat this challenge. Since 2015, we’ve worked on lowering greenhouse gas emissions, the main cause of climate change.

Recently, Micron Technology announced a major investment in Central New York, potentially worth $100 billion. They promise to create 9,000 good jobs. However, this growth comes with big environmental questions. Micron’s plans must prioritize renewable energy and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Micron has committed to using 100% renewable energy. They need to follow through by investing in projects that boost energy efficiency and reduce natural gas use during chip production. We recommend that local leaders continually monitor Micron’s environmental impact. They should ensure the company sticks to its promises and adheres to New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

Historically, when industries expand without proper oversight, it can have devastating effects. For instance, industrial growth led to severe pollution in Onondaga Lake, one of the most contaminated bodies of water in the U.S. We must learn from this past and ensure that new growth does not repeat these mistakes.

The scientific community warns that if we keep increasing greenhouse gas emissions, we will face more extreme weather. This means life could become much harder on our planet. However, by stabilizing and then reducing these emissions, we can create a healthier environment for future generations.

Renewable energy solutions like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power are more cost-effective than nuclear energy. By investing in these sources, Micron can help advance New York’s commitment to clean energy.

In summary, while we welcome Micron’s investment, we want a thoughtful conversation about balancing growth and environmental sustainability. The time to act is now, and Micron must play a key role in this critical effort.
