Davos Meeting Highlights: At the recent World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025, global leaders discussed pressing issues like artificial intelligence, environmental sustainability, and regional cooperation.
The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi, announced an ambitious plan to establish the world’s largest tropical forest reserve. The Kivu to Kinshasa Green Corridor will protect over 550,000 square kilometers in the Congo Basin, benefiting both the environment and the livelihoods of millions.
“This initiative will not only safeguard our forests but also boost the economy,” Tshisekedi stated.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, soon to lead ASEAN, shared his confidence in regional integration efforts, especially in green energy. He noted that while the US is Malaysia’s largest investor, ties with China are strengthening. “We prefer dialogue to conflict,” he emphasized.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for reforms in social media governance within the European Union. He highlighted the need to tackle misinformation and urged for increased funding to improve social media algorithms, insisting that “European values are not for sale.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres raised alarms about two major global threats: the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and climate change. He stressed that these issues require urgent action from both governments and businesses. “We need to work together to ensure AI benefits everyone,” Guterres stated, urging the private sector to uphold their climate commitments.
Palestinian Authority Foreign Affairs Minister Varsen Aghabekian expressed hope following the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. She emphasized the importance of immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza and planning for a better future.
Lastly, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hasan Al Shaibani outlined a hopeful vision for Syria’s future, focusing on unity and respect for women’s rights in the new government after the recent regime change.
