Penn State is on a mission to create an updated master plan for the University Park Campus. This plan will serve as a roadmap for the campus’s growth over the next decade. The last master plan was developed over 25 years ago, making this effort all the more significant. The campus covers more than 2,000 acres and includes around 600 buildings, totaling 20 million square feet.
The Penn State Office of Physical Plant is leading this initiative, with plans to involve various stakeholders, including students, faculty, and staff. Engaging the community is vital, as their input will shape decisions on how best to use spaces for learning and research. “Our aim is to create a campus where students can thrive academically and socially,” said President Neeli Bendapudi.
One key goal is to align the physical environment with Penn State’s mission in education, research, and community services. The team will look at recent changes in higher education, such as new teaching methods and advancing technologies. These factors help ensure the campus evolves while respecting its historical roots.
Recent studies highlight that adaptable learning spaces boost student engagement. According to a 2022 survey, 67% of students believe flexible classroom settings enhance their learning experience. Penn State’s planning team will take such trends into account while redesigning spaces.
The community is encouraged to engage in this planning process. There will be in-person events, virtual meetings, and various online tools, including an interactive mapping tool and an idea board. Neil Sullivan, who leads the project, emphasized the importance of feedback: “The voices of our students, faculty, and neighbors are essential for informed decision-making.”
The planning team will also assess existing academic spaces to ensure they meet current and future teaching needs. They will identify what facilities are necessary for student life, housing, and wellness. Further, they will develop criteria for deciding when to renovate or retire buildings, ensuring the campus stays modern and welcoming.
