The Lindenwood women’s basketball team recently celebrated a thrilling 69-67 victory over Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana. This win marks a milestone, being the team’s first-ever win in this location.
From the start, the Lions showcased their long-range shooting skills. They began the game with three consecutive three-pointers, including two from Brooke Coffey, putting them ahead early at 9-8. By the end of the first quarter, they held a solid 18-13 lead.
The Lions continued to shoot well from beyond the arc, adding more threes in the second quarter. Mya Skoff’s layup extended their lead to 26-19 with six minutes left in the half. Though Southern Indiana made a few gains, Lindenwood maintained a 34-31 lead going into halftime. Ellie Brueggemann was a standout, scoring 12 points in the first half.
The third quarter saw the Lions hit their largest lead at 39-31 after another three from Coffey. However, Southern Indiana fought back, and by the end of the quarter, the teams were tied at 43. A series of quick points put Lindenwood back ahead at 48-43.
The final quarter was intense, featuring 11 lead changes. Brueggemann hit another important three-pointer to bring the score to 53-48. But Southern Indiana reclaimed the lead at 61-58 after a crucial three from Alli Saunders.
With the game tied at 58, the Lions quickly regained control. Brueggemann made a layup to put Lindenwood ahead 62-61. As the game neared the end, Gracie Kelsey grabbed an offensive rebound, passing it to Brueggemann for a corner three that lifted Lindenwood to a 65-64 lead. A few key defensive stops helped solidify their victory as Aleshia Jones sealed the win with two free throws.
In this game, Ellie Brueggemann led all players with 26 points, followed by Brooke Coffey with 16 points and Aleshia Jones contributing 15 points.
This win is part of a larger trend in women’s sports, where increased visibility and investment are changing the landscape. Reports show a 40% increase in viewership for women’s college basketball over the past two years, highlighting the growing support for these athletes.
