In October, Priscilla Wolcott, an animal control officer with Fresno Humane Animal Services, received an urgent call about four abandoned dogs in an orchard. There was a mama dog and her three puppies. Since the orchard was far from the shelter, it took Wolcott two days to reach them. During this time, the orchard workers stepped in to care for the dogs.
Wolcott explained, “There’s no one living out there. The workers were kind enough to feed and water them.” When she finally arrived, things took a surprising turn. Instead of just four dogs, she found a total of 13. Along with the original four, there was another mama with her newborn litter and an additional adult dog.
The workers had initially overlooked the extra dogs, but they were crucial to the group. One of the dogs had even given birth during the wait. When Wolcott approached, the dogs greeted her with wagging tails and friendly licks, reminding her of the resilience and trust animals can show even in tough situations.
“It was a shock, definitely,” she said. “But it was a really nice shock because they were so sweet.” Wolcott worked out a way to take them all back, even putting one dog in the back seat for the journey home. “I’m not gonna leave one of them out here. We’re gonna make it work,” she noted, prioritizing their safety and comfort.
All 13 dogs were in good health when they reached the shelter. The two mamas and their puppies were transferred to Ruff Day Rescue, where the little ones grew up and eventually found their forever homes.
The third adult dog, named Hope, stayed at the shelter until someone adopted her. “Seeing them so happy living their best lives with loving families — it’s a big reminder of why I do this,” Wolcott shared.
