STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Gov. Tony Evers recently visited Operation Bootstrap, a vital food bank in Stevens Point, to see firsthand how the organization supports local families. This food bank offers up to two weeks’ worth of food each month, including fresh items like milk and eggs, as well as canned goods.
Duane Greuel, President of the Board of Directors, highlights the importance of their work: “We’re a shot in the arm for people that really need assistance. We’re kind of like a last resort.”
Growing Demand
Over the past two years, the number of families needing help from Operation Bootstrap has doubled. Greuel explained that they now purchase a semi-load of food every five weeks, compared to once every quarter before. This increase underscores the rising demand for food assistance in Portage County, where nearly 600 people daily benefit from their services.
“SNAP doesn’t cover all the food needs for Americans in crisis,” said State Representative Vincent Miresse. “Operation Bootstrap provides that extra help to ensure people get what they need.”
During his visit, Gov. Evers learned how crucial this organization is for the community and even assisted with packing food orders. “It’s heartwarming to see the volunteers here,” he remarked. “They are making a real difference in people’s lives.”

Greuel noted, “When a cart leaves this building, there’s peace of mind that people are getting support.”
