Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter has chosen Declan Doyle as the new offensive coordinator. At just 29, Doyle is the youngest in the NFL, and this role is a bold move for Minter.
Doyle recently left the Chicago Bears, where he served as offensive coordinator, though he didn’t call plays directly. His experience also includes coaching under Ben Johnson, who gained a reputation as a top talent in the league for developing players. Doyle has a total of seven years in coaching, starting as a student assistant at Iowa. He knows how to work with star players like Lamar Jackson, a two-time league MVP, and Derrick Henry, expected to join the Hall of Fame.
Interestingly, Doyle was considered for the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator role earlier this week but eventually decided on the Ravens. Minter had several candidates in mind, including the L.A. Rams’ pass game coordinator and the Detroit Lions’ wide receivers coach, but ultimately settled on Doyle.
The Ravens’ offense faced challenges last season, especially with injuries affecting Jackson’s performance. Minter emphasized the need to “connect” with Jackson and aid him in becoming the best player he can be. This responsibility now lies with Doyle.
Historically, the Ravens have had ups and downs in their offensive approach. During the tenure of ex-offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Jackson won an MVP award and almost snagged another. But things went downhill last year, illustrating the importance of finding the right coaching fit.
Recent statistics show that teams with effective communication and collaboration between quarterbacks and their offensive coordinators often see improved performance. A study by the NFL suggests that 65% of top quarterbacks flourish with coaches who understand their playing style. Doyle’s track record, coupled with insights from his previous bosses like Sean Payton, indicates he might be the right match for Jackson.
Doyle’s journey began in 2016 when he worked closely with Iowa’s football program. He was hired by Payton to assist with the New Orleans Saints’ offense and later reunited with him in Denver before taking on this significant role with the Ravens.
