Dushyant Singh Panwar, who leads ghost tours in India, notes that people crave unique experiences. As options for entertainment grow, haunted walks provide a refreshing alternative. He sees a growing interest in these niche experiences among urban travelers.
Interest in Local Legends
While paranormal tourism in India is still developing compared to the West, local legends and myths have been part of rural culture for generations. In North Kerala and South Coastal Karnataka, traditional performing arts like Theyyam and Bhoota Kola involve spiritual experiences that draw crowds, creating immersive cultural events.
The movie *Kantara* recently highlighted Bhoota Kola, showcasing its mysteries to a wider audience. Many regions have their own spiritual practices and beliefs tied to supernatural elements, but tourism around these events is still in its early stages. However, as awareness increases, more people seek to experience these rich traditions.
Emerging Opportunities
Despite being a new concept in India, organizations like the Parapsychology and Investigation Research Society are making strides in paranormal tourism.
