Owner Joe Myint remembers when they first opened. “Burmese food is unique,” he says. At first, they worried about how people would react. Even some from the Burmese community were skeptical. Yet, they’ve built a loyal following who appreciate the flavors that blend Indian and Thai influences.
Recently, Myint took a hit, losing nearly 55% of his business due to the impacts of construction and the pandemic. The restaurant had to close for several months during the height of COVID but returned with a strong wave of community support. They resumed limited dining options and continue offering takeout.
Despite the hardships, the food remains the star of the show. Must-try dishes include a spicy chicken curry, which comes with rice cooked in coconut milk. And the vegetarian options, like the tangy pickled mango sauce with tofu, are remarkable too.
Interestingly, as Myint looks to the future, he’s aware that many of his loyal customers are getting older. He’s keen to attract a younger crowd and has ramped up his social media efforts to help do this.
Expert opinions in the food industry are cautious as well. Food trends suggest that regional cuisines can thrive if presented appealingly through social media. This change in marketing could help restaurants like Mandalay reach new audiences.
While the construction is nearing completion, Myint remains hopeful but has plans in place in case they need to move. “If we can just get nine months of steady support, we could be okay,” he says optimistically.
