Eighteen years ago, during the Super Bowl off week, Steve Tisch made a bold prediction. He believed that his New York Giants would defeat the unbeaten New England Patriots. “We’ll have more points than they do,” he confidently stated. And he was right— the Giants won Super Bowl 42 with a score of 17-14.
Back then, Tisch was a new NFL owner and Oscar-winning producer of Forrest Gump. He and fellow owner John Mara shared a unique partnership, often considered one of the most unusual management structures in sports.
Tisch emphasized the importance of working well together. “A situation like that can be very dysfunctional,” he warned, noting they were careful to avoid any conflicts.
Fast forward to today, and Tisch is back in the headlines for a troubling reason. Recent emails revealed a connection between him and Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender. These emails discussed women in a crude manner and showed Tisch asking Epstein about various women’s backgrounds.
In a statement, Tisch acknowledged their brief association but downplayed the weight of their conversations. He distanced himself from Epstein, saying he never accepted any invitations or visited his infamous island. Yet, the emails raise serious questions about his judgment. Ignorance is no excuse.
In sports, particularly in the NFL, accountability often seems uneven. Players face serious consequences for their actions, while owners sometimes slip under the radar. For example, Daniel Snyder and Jerry Richardson sold their teams amid misconduct investigations, while Patriots owner Robert Kraft faced no lasting penalties from his controversial arrest.
The NFL has a personal conduct policy stating that owners should be held to higher standards. Many believe Tisch should face consequences, too. Given his position, he let down not just himself but also his business partner, John Mara, who is currently fighting cancer.
While Tisch has done philanthropic work, his ties to Epstein cannot be overlooked. It’s crucial for the NFL to hold its owners accountable for their actions, regardless of their past achievements. In a league where ethics matter, every owner should be responsible for their choices—especially when those choices can impact the entire organization.
