Vic Fangio’s Retirement Rumors: What’s Next for the Eagles’ Defensive Guru?

The Eagles have made some important changes to their coaching staff. Last week, they hired a new offensive coordinator. They’ve also been looking into defensive coordinator options since the end of their season.

Jimmy Kempski from PhillyVoice.com reports that Vic Fangio, who had initially planned to retire, has agreed to stay on for the 2026 season. However, there’s still a chance he could reconsider this decision. Interestingly, he also toyed with the idea of retirement right after the Eagles won the Super Bowl last year.

When Fangio hinted at retirement, the Eagles reached out to Jonathan Gannon, their defensive coordinator from 2021 and 2022. Gannon, however, has already taken a position with the Green Bay Packers. Meanwhile, the Eagles were also considering Jim Schwartz, who led their defense from 2016 to 2020. Schwartz was reportedly disappointed after the Browns hired Todd Monken instead of him as their head coach.

These coaching shifts reflect a broader trend in the NFL, where teams frequently reassess their staff based on recent performance. According to a 2022 survey by the NFL Coaches Association, almost 30% of teams changed their head coach in the last two seasons. This constant flux can impact team dynamics and fan expectations.

As the Eagles navigate these changes, it will be interesting to see how their choices shape the upcoming season and if they can build on their past successes.
