The Abia State Government has made a significant step in addressing climate change by validating its new climate change policy, which emphasizes the importance of including people with disabilities. This decision came during a gathering of various stakeholders organized by the Ministry of Environment.
The meeting, held on January 31, 2026, brought together representatives from different sectors, including government agencies, local climate officers, business groups, and disability advocates, among others. The draft policy was shared by a team from the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagements.
According to Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, the Commissioner for Environment, ongoing discussions since 2024 have focused on crafting a climate policy that meets international standards. With Gov. Alex Otti’s commitment to environmentally sustainable initiatives, the policy aims to drive effective climate action.
Mr. Kingsley Anosike, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, highlighted that integrating climate action into the budget is crucial. “Our focus is on green initiatives, including climate-friendly buildings and solar-powered street lights,” he stated. In fact, over 9,000 solar street lights have already been installed in the state.
Mr. David Anyaele, head of the Abia Disability Commission, stressed that people with disabilities face heightened risks during extreme weather events. He emphasized that the final policy must reflect the governor’s directive for disability inclusion, ensuring that vulnerable groups are considered.
Mr. Godwin Unumeri, Acting Executive Director of CCD, praised the ministry for its commitment to creating an inclusive policy. CCD has been researching strategies for integrating disability into climate adaptation since 2024. This ongoing collaboration ensures that the needs of all community members are represented in the climate policy.
A recent survey shows that over 35% of Nigerians are concerned about the effects of climate change on vulnerable populations, highlighting the need for inclusive policies. The more we involve diverse voices in discussions, the better our responses to climate challenges will be.
