5-Year-Old Liam Conejo Ramos and His Father Back in Minnesota After Facing ICE Detention in Texas

Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, have been released from an immigration detention facility in Texas after a judge intervened. They traveled back to their home in Minnesota, thanks to Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro’s assistance.

Originally from Ecuador, Adrian and Liam were taken from a Minneapolis suburb on January 20. Their arrest sparked significant controversy, especially when images of young Liam, wearing a bunny hat and a Spider-Man backpack, surfaced online. These images highlighted the stress and confusion that young children can face in such situations.

In a troubling turn of events, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that Liam was not the target of the immigration officers and that his mother would not take him after Adrian’s arrest. Adrian expressed a desire for Liam to stay with him during the ordeal.

Federal immigration officials have faced criticism, with many claiming they used Liam as bait to apprehend his father. This accusation was denied by the Department of Homeland Security, which labeled it a “lie.”

The incident prompted a strong reaction from lawmakers. U.S. District Judge Fred Biery condemned the administration’s practices, stating the case illustrates poorly thought-out immigration policies. Neighbors and school officials expressed concern over the psychological impact on children caught up in immigration enforcement.

In a touching gesture, Rep. Castro wrote a letter to Liam while they traveled back to Minnesota, emphasizing the community’s support and the importance of immigrants in shaping America. He reassured Liam that he had moved many people around the world, and that his home was indeed in America.

Senator Amy Klobuchar echoed these sentiments, stating that children belong in school with their families, not in detention. Similarly, Rep. Ilhan Omar shared her happiness seeing Liam return home, highlighting the joy of family reunification.

This incident reflects a broader trend in immigration enforcement, where the impacts on families—particularly on children—are often overlooked. Understanding these stories can foster empathy and drive discussions on how to improve the system.
