Astera Health Unveils Top Health Priorities Shaping Our Community’s Future

Astera Health, which serves Wadena, Todd, and Otter Tail counties, recently wrapped up its 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment. With over 1,800 residents sharing their views through surveys, the assessment brought together insights from community members, schools, law enforcement, and public health agencies. It also tapped into various public health reports and hospital data.

From this extensive feedback, three main health issues stood out: high blood pressure, obesity, and substance use disorder. These areas are now top priorities for the community. Additionally, concerns like mental health, access to care, and family safety will continue to receive attention.

To tackle these challenges, Astera Health is teaming up with local organizations, schools, and public health departments. They hold Community Health Forums every June and December to keep the conversation going and ensure that everyone has a voice in shaping health initiatives.

Chief Operating Officer Shelly Gompf emphasizes the importance of collaboration: “By working together, we can create a healthier future for everyone who calls this region home.” This commitment reflects a growing trend in healthcare where community engagement is key to improving overall health outcomes. In fact, studies show that public health initiatives that involve community feedback are often more effective. For instance, communities that actively engage in health discussions see a 20% increase in participation in health programs.
