WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — NASCAR has postponed its preseason event, The Clash, due to a severe snowstorm in North Carolina. Originally set for Sunday, the race will now take place on Wednesday at Bowman Gray Stadium, a historic quarter-mile track in Winston-Salem.
The area faced heavy snowfall, with some places receiving up to 15 inches. This led to safety concerns for teams and fans trying to reach the stadium. Roads started improving, but authorities stressed caution, encouraging everyone to stay off the roads until conditions were safer.
Clash manager Justin Swilling confirmed that the decision to delay the event involved collaboration with local officials and transportation experts. He noted, “When we woke up today, it was clear we needed to give everyone time to dig out.”
Interestingly, this amount of snowfall is noteworthy. Charlotte recorded its fifth-highest single-day snowfall ever. For Winston-Salem, this snowstorm was the most significant since 2018.
Swilling mentioned that they considered going ahead with the event even without fans but decided against it. Events at Bowman Gray are known for their lively atmosphere, largely thanks to passionate fans. Swilling stated, “We wanted to ensure the community had time to recover from this storm. Wednesday feels like the best choice.”
If this race had been during the regular season, they might have taken a different approach. However, since the next major event, the Daytona 500, starts later, they had the flexibility to wait.
