The Indian Railways is gearing up for an exciting phase in 2026! The Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently announced plans to introduce more Vande Bharat trains, including Sleeper and Chair Car options. These new additions aim to enhance passenger comfort and convenience.
Currently, the manufacturing of these trains is in full swing, with 17,000 coaches set to be produced. Statistics show a capital expenditure of ₹2,93,030 crores has been allocated for Railways in the 2026-27 budget. This is the highest investment in the ministry’s history. According to the Ministry of Railways, this funding will focus on high-speed connectivity, freight services, and enhancing safety measures.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains particularly stand out. Following the success of the initial 16-coach models, a new 24-car version is in production at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. A total of 50 of these will be crafted, enhancing long-distance travel comfort for passengers.
In comparison to the past, such investments are unprecedented. For instance, back in 2000, the focus was primarily on basic services. Today, the emphasis is on modernization and introducing high-speed trains, which mirrors global trends in transportation.
