On Tuesday afternoon, Titan Walk and Becker Amphitheater buzzed with excitement as students took a break from classes to celebrate a special occasion. The Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) marked its 50th anniversary, drawing a lively crowd and the delightful aroma of fresh food.
ASI, Cal State Fullerton’s student government, has been a cornerstone for campus life since it was created in 1959. It was officially named ASI in 1976 when it became a non-profit organization. “It’s important to recognize the efforts of students who came before us,” said Liam Ryals, a representative for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Outside the Titan Student Union, booths offered information about various ASI services, such as the Children’s Center and Food Pantry. ASI Vice President Juan Salguero noted, “This event helps students learn what we’re doing on campus.”
Tents also featured local vendors like airbrush artists, offering temporary tattoos and merchandise with CSUF logos. Students enjoyed free food from food trucks—Tacos Chicanx and Messi Burgers—if they collected stamps from ASI booths.
The highlight of the day was a performance by No Duh, a well-known tribute band that covers the iconic group No Doubt. The band’s bassist, EJ Curse, recalled their early days, including a gig at Gwen Stefani’s album listening party in 2004. “We started out with just a few songs,” he shared.
It’s worth noting that No Doubt’s lead singer, Gwen Stefani, and bassist Tony Kanal are CSUF alumni. The crowd reveled in nostalgic hits like “Don’t Speak,” and even a Beatles cover.
Mindy Milburn, the lead singer and Gwen Stefani lookalike, expressed her excitement, “It’s an honor to perform here. It feels special.” The connection is strong, as No Doubt played one of their earliest shows at CSUF back in 1994, just before their breakthrough album “Tragic Kingdom.”
For many students like Ethan Smith, a third-year business major, this concert was a dream come true. “I’ve always loved No Doubt. Watching them here for the first time was unforgettable.”
Recent statistics reveal that live music events significantly boost student engagement on campuses, highlighting their importance in university culture. Events like this not only bring entertainment but also foster a sense of community among students.
As ASI moves forward, these celebrations remind everyone of the building blocks laid by previous students while offering a glimpse of what else is to come on campus.
