Amazon and T-Mobile are cutting hundreds of jobs in Bellevue and across Washington. This has shaken up the local tech scene as companies adjust to new economic pressures.
Rob Pickering, who runs Snapdoodle Toys and Games, shared his concerns. He noted that many of his customers might be impacted because their partners work at Amazon or T-Mobile. These job cuts could mean bad news for local businesses.
Amazon is letting go of 2,198 employees statewide, with 626 of those in Bellevue alone. This is part of a larger plan to reduce 16,000 jobs across the company. Last October, over 2,300 jobs in the Puget Sound area were already cut. The remaining layoffs span locations including Seattle and Redmond, with Amazon aiming to streamline management and boost its spending on artificial intelligence.
T-Mobile, based in Bellevue, is also reducing its staff by 393 positions in Washington. High-level roles, including vice presidents, will be affected as the company reshapes itself to better meet market demands. Employees were told they have 60 days before layoffs take effect.
These cuts come at a time when the tech sector in Washington is facing significant losses. Since January 2025, nearly 9,800 tech workers have been laid off, with recent reductions at companies like Microsoft and Meta. This raises questions about the future of the local economy.
Pickering wonders how the layoffs will impact his toy store. While some unemployed parents may buy games to lift their children’s spirits during hard times, he remains cautious about the future. “Bellevue seems resilient, but I’m not so sure it will hold,” he said.
