The United Nations’ Quadripartite—composed of the FAO, UNEP, WHO, and WOAH—has renewed its commitment to the One Health approach. This collaboration focuses on the connection between human health, animal health, plant health, and the environment.
By working together, these organizations aim to address health challenges that arise at this intersection. The renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) sets the stage for shared action on important issues like:
- Strengthening health systems
- Preparing for and responding to epidemics and pandemics
- Controlling neglected and endemic diseases
- Tackling antimicrobial resistance
- Ensuring food safety
- Including environmental issues in health policies
The Quadripartite remains focused on principles of cooperation, inclusiveness, and equity, striving to create effective policies and help countries implement the One Health approach.
Recent studies highlight that health risks are increasingly linked to environmental changes. According to the WHO, around 60% of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic, meaning they originate from animals. This fact underlines the importance of a coordinated response to health threats.
With the renewed MoU effective until November 28, 2030, these organizations reaffirm their goal of promoting sustainable health outcomes for all life on Earth.
