CHAMPAIGN, IL — The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District has a new leader: Mamadou D. Tounkara, MD, MSW, MPH. He steps in as public health administrator and executive director, taking over from Julie Pryde.
Tounkara isn’t new to the game. He has over ten years of experience in public health, focusing on infectious diseases and patient safety. Before this role, he was CUPHD’s deputy director and held key positions in Utah, where he tackled COVID-19 outbreaks and worked on population health.
His vision for public health is clear and community-focused. Tounkara aims to make healthcare more accessible, encourage healthy lifestyles, support mental health, and work to prevent violence. He wants to break down barriers that stop people from getting care, enhance preventative services, and increase access to healthy food.
Collaboration will be a big part of his strategy. Tounkara is committed to working with local organizations to address homelessness and reduce gun violence. He currently participates in the Champaign County Homeless Shelters and Outreach Committee, which aligns with his aim to improve social health factors.
Recent statistics highlight the urgency of these issues. A study from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that 1 in 4 adults report facing barriers to healthcare, including cost and transportation. Tounkara’s focus on community input is key to addressing these barriers effectively.
“I’m excited to connect with everyone in the community,” Tounkara said. “Together, we’ll ensure our work reflects your needs and goals.”
