Breast Cancer Rise in Jharkhand: Understanding the Causes
Breast cancer is becoming increasingly common among women in Jharkhand. Health experts believe this rise is due to lifestyle changes and the use of harmful substances.
In recent years, doctors noticed a growing number of cases, especially among urban women. Key factors include late marriages, which lead to later pregnancies, reduced physical activity, and a more sedentary way of life.
Dr. Anamika Kumari, an oncologist at RJSP Cancer Hospital in Ranchi, highlights a concerning trend: breast cancer is no longer limited to older women. More cases are now seen in those between 30 and 40 years old. “This change stems from lifestyle habits, including obesity. Many young women start drinking, smoking, and eating junk food, which can contribute to weight gain and hormonal shifts,” Dr. Kumari explains.
Additionally, fewer pregnancies and shorter breastfeeding periods are contributing factors. “Breastfeeding is known to help lower breast cancer risk,” she notes. However, many modern women choose to breastfeed for less time, and a preference for smaller families means fewer childbirths overall.
Experts also point out that many patients seek help only when their cancer reaches a later stage, making treatment more challenging. Dr. Abhinav Shekhar, another oncologist, mentions that about 10% of breast cancer cases are inherited. The rest are often linked to high estrogen levels caused by delaying pregnancy and lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, societal stigma can prevent women from addressing visible symptoms like lumps or skin changes, causing delays in seeking care.
Regular screening can help. Dr. Shekhar recommends that all women over 40 have an annual mammogram to aid in early detection.
Recent statistics show that breast cancer accounts for 30% of all cancer cases among women in India, indicating a nationwide trend. Raising awareness through social media and community outreach can play a vital role in changing perceptions and encouraging timely medical check-ups.
In conclusion, understanding these patterns and their causes is essential for improving women’s health in Jharkhand. Education and awareness can lead to earlier diagnosis and better treatment outcomes for those affected.
