SpaceX has paused Falcon 9 launches after an issue with the rocket’s upper stage that emerged at the end of a recent launch. On February 2, a Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 10:47 a.m. Eastern. The rocket successfully deployed 25 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit about an hour after liftoff.
Later that day, SpaceX issued a statement noting that the upper stage “experienced an off-nominal condition” while preparing for a final engine burn to deorbit. They couldn’t provide specific details but confirmed everything went smoothly until that point.
SpaceX indicated that the upper stage took steps to “passivate” itself, a process that reduces risk by venting unused propellants and discharging batteries. They are currently analyzing data to find the root cause of the issue before resuming launches.
The company did not give a timeline for this process but listed the next Falcon 9 mission for February 5, which was pushed back from February 3.

In September 2024, during the Crew-9 mission, an upper stage issue caused it to reenter outside its intended zone. Spaceflight expert Jonathan McDowell shared insights on February 2, pointing out that the upper stage from the latest launch is currently orbiting at around 110 by 241 kilometers. This low orbit suggests it will reenter the atmosphere soon.
