Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son of Libya’s late dictator Moammar Gadhafi, has reportedly been assassinated at his home in Zintan, Libya. At 53, he was once viewed as the potential successor to his father, who was overthrown and killed during the Arab Spring in 2011. In recent years, Saif made efforts to re-enter the political arena in Libya.
His political advisor, Abdullah Othman, described the attack as “treacherous and cowardly,” noting that four masked assailants disabled security cameras before fatally shooting him. However, Libyan authorities have not confirmed this incident, and there has been no response from the International Criminal Court (ICC), which had sought Saif’s arrest for crimes against humanity.
Born on June 25, 1972, in Tripoli, Saif Gadhafi was educated abroad, including at the London School of Economics. Many saw him as a more modern figure compared to his father. However, during the 2011 uprising, he sparked controversy with a speech warning of impending chaos and violence if protests continued. This moment marked a shift in his public image, as he aligned himself with the regime’s harsh actions against demonstrators.
In June 2011, the ICC issued arrest warrants for him and his father due to their roles in suppressing dissent. After fleeing, Saif was captured in November 2011 by a militia in Zintan and remained incarcerated until June 2017 when a controversial amnesty law led to his release.
In November 2021, he announced his candidacy for Libya’s presidential elections, which were postponed indefinitely due to ongoing political strife and security issues. His return divided public opinion—supporters saw him as a stabilizing figure, while opponents feared a return to authoritarianism.
Before his death, Saif was reportedly working on proposals for national reconciliation. His team has called for an independent investigation into his assassination, urging international bodies to act swiftly and transparently to uncover the truth.
