The Indian government is stepping up its game in train travel by launching a big manufacturing program for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. They aim to produce 260 trainsets to boost long-distance travel across the nation.
Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced this target in the Lok Sabha recently. The Ministry of Railways is focusing on combining new technology and smart planning for this project. The production process involves creating prototypes, followed by thorough testing before mass production begins.
The manufacturing works are divided among several players, including BEML and the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. These sleeper trains will enter regular service based on demand and how ready they are for operation.
This initiative is set to improve the travel experience for passengers. The new trains will have modern features designed for safety and comfort. They include jerk-free couplers, anti-climbers, and a safety system called KAVACH that meets international standards. Moreover, the car body is designed to withstand crashes, ensuring greater security for travelers.
To ensure fire safety, the trains come equipped with special fire-barrier doors and an advanced fire-detection and suppression system. They are designed to handle speeds of up to 160 km/h, with a peak design speed of 180 km/h, benefiting from a regenerative braking system that enhances energy efficiency.
On top of that, hygiene is a priority. The air conditioning units use a UV-C lamp system that can deactivate 99% of harmful bacteria, leading to a cleaner environment onboard.
Other amenities include automatically controlled plug doors, spacious gangways, and CCTV systems for security. For added passenger safety, there are emergency communication units allowing quick contact with train staff.
Additionally, the trains will feature specialized restrooms for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) and a centralized system to monitor amenities like lighting and air conditioning.
With these changes, the future of train travel in India looks promising, aiming to balance efficiency with passenger comfort.
