Henry Guevara is a shining example of homegrown talent in occupational nursing. His story highlights how dedication and a solid education can open doors. Starting at Southwestern University, Henry laid the foundation for his impressive career in Central Texas.
After graduating from Georgetown High School, he jumped straight into college at just 17. He chose Southwestern University because he admired its strong reputation and the teaching style of Dr. Bob Soulen, who made complex subjects easy to grasp. Henry recalls, “He was a true master and made sure everyone understood the material.”
Along with earning his Bachelor of Applied Sciences in 1981, Henry was actively involved on campus. He joined Pi Kappa Alpha and served on the Student Judiciary Committee. Breaking barriers, he became the first in his family to graduate from college. But he didn’t stop there. He later received his BSN from UTMB in Galveston, as well as both an MSN and Ph.D. from UT Austin, and an MPH from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Henry’s career as an occupational health nurse practitioner has been impressive. He’s provided care at leading companies like Dell, IBM, and Georgetown Hospital. His work includes treating injuries, conducting medical exams, and administering immunizations. He has even contributed to UT Austin’s Dell Medical School and the City of Austin’s Sexual Health Clinic.
Recently, Henry took on a groundbreaking role at Neuralink Corp., a company innovating in brain technology. They implant electrodes that help disabled individuals by detecting brain signals responsible for movement. This work has the potential to transform lives and leverage technology to enhance human capabilities.
His contributions haven’t gone unnoticed. Henry has received multiple accolades from his alma maters and the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses for his dedication and professional excellence. He also teaches a class each semester at either UT Austin or Texas State School of Nursing, hoping to inspire the next generation of nurses. With a nursing shortage still an issue, his commitment to education is more crucial than ever.
Henry’s journey illustrates how a solid foundation at Southwestern opened multiple avenues for growth. Now, he’s not just helping companies thrive; he’s also impacting lives through pioneering healthcare innovations.
