Pillsbury is a well-known name in baking. But when it comes to its red velvet cake mix, it might have missed the mark. A recent review ranked eleven of their mixes, and guess what? The red velvet mix came in last.
The taste tester wasn’t a fan of red velvet in general. But even she felt that she could “taste the red dye” in Pillsbury’s Moist Supreme Red Velvet Cake Mix. She said, “Eating something so obviously artificial just isn’t appealing to 21st-century palates.” There was a hint of chocolate flavor, but it couldn’t hide the artificial taste.
Interestingly, the idea that red velvet cake is just a chocolate cake dyed red is a misconception. The real recipe combines cocoa powder, vanilla, and an acid like vinegar, creating its unique taste.
Consumer Reactions
However, there are ways to improve it. Adding a vanilla or cream cheese glaze can enhance the cake’s moisture and sweetness, helping to cover up that unwanted dye flavor.
On the flip side, not everyone is dissatisfied. Some fans declare it their favorite, and it performed better than expected in another ranking of red velvet mixes. It came in third, with Old School Brand’s Red Velvet Cake Mix taking the top spot. While it may not stack up against other Pillsbury flavors, like lemon and golden butter, it still has a place in the market.
