Second Teen Identified in Rainier Beach Double Homicide: K Reward for Information That Could Help Solve the Case!

Authorities have identified the second teenager killed in a double homicide in Seattle’s Rainier Beach neighborhood. The victims, 17-year-old Traveiah Houfmuse and 18-year-old Tyjon Malik Stewart, were students at Rainier Beach High School.

The tragic incident took place right in front of a local school, nearby both a bus stop and the high school. Witnesses report that Houfmuse was shot multiple times, while Stewart suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the neck. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police have not confirmed if gang-related activity is involved.

Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes has stated that the investigation is ongoing but refrained from discussing possible connections that might affect the case’s integrity. “Our officers and detectives are working very hard on it,” he emphasized.

In the wake of the shooting, both Mayor Katie Wilson and other local council members responded swiftly. Mayor Wilson, who was returning from Washington D.C., expressed her heartbreak on social media, calling for justice and support for the community. “This community deserves justice,” she stated.

Community groups have also stepped in. The Progress Pushers, a nonprofit focused on violence intervention and youth support, organized a gathering for unity and healing days after the shooting. Jeremy Winzer, the director of the group, urged the public to focus on prevention instead of labeling the victims. “Nobody in any community wants this,” he said, emphasizing the need for healing and support.

After the shooting, concerns about potential retaliation have risen, with reports of social media posts showing teens with weapons at memorials for the victims. In response, the Seattle Police Department is increasing their presence in the Rainier Beach area, extending their mobile precinct’s stay from one week to three months.

The Youth Peace and Justice Foundation has announced a reward of up to $5,000 for any information leading to an arrest and conviction. They highlighted the importance of community involvement, stating, “Violence thrives in silence.” The organization aims to ensure community members feel safe coming forward.

This incident reflects a larger trend. Gun violence among youth has been rising in many urban areas. According to recent studies, 2021 saw a more than 20% increase in firearm-related deaths among people aged 10 to 19. These statistics underline the urgency for communities to address the root causes of violence.

The heartbreak felt over this tragedy resonates widely. It serves as a sad reminder of the need for ongoing conversation about youth violence and the importance of community support in preventing such incidents.
