Nabukelevu Village in Serua is making strides in eco-friendly living. Recently, the community received 20 compost bins to boost waste management efforts.
Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Information, Environment, and Climate Change, delivered the bins as part of a government initiative promoting sustainability in rural areas. This initiative not only focuses on waste management but also aims to nurture environmental awareness among the youth.
Two of the bins were given to Burenitu Village School. This step encourages students to think about their environment and develop responsible habits from a young age. During the event, Ms. Tabuya urged the kids to take pride in their surroundings. She emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal and urged them to remind others to do the same.
“When you visit rivers for food or swimming, always take your rubbish home, like your snack packets,” she advised. She also encouraged students to speak up if they see older generations mismanaging waste.
Furthermore, Ms. Tabuya highlighted the environmental threats posed by pesticides, urging students to focus on their studies and remain connected to their cultural roots.
This program isn’t just about bins; it’s part of a larger trend. In a recent survey by the Environmental Protection Agency, nearly 70% of individuals expressed concern about waste management in their communities. Local initiatives like this can inspire broader change.
