Aashaan Movie Review: Heartfelt Dreams and Film Industry Realities
Aashaan tells the story of two men with dreams—Aashaan, played by Indrans, and Anandan, portrayed by Joemon Jyothir. Aashaan is in the midst of a long kidney dialysis treatment but is determined to prove his devotion to his favorite actor, Kamal Haasan. His big wish? A blood transfusion from Haasan himself.
Meanwhile, Anandan is struggling to make a name for himself in the film industry. When he asks to use Aashaan’s unique apartment for a movie shoot, it’s a chance neither can resist. Anandan believes this location will help him land a job as an assistant director under renowned filmmaker K.R. Shajahan. However, there’s a catch: the apartment must have a certain aesthetic, including a well, which Aashaan’s home conveniently provides.
Johnpaul George, the director, cleverly contrasts their lives. Aashaan enjoys a comfortable post-retirement life, while Anandan’s youth is defined by desperation and ambition. Anandan will do what it takes to succeed, even if it means exploiting others. Aashaan, on the other hand, is looking for one last shot at acting.
The film does a brilliant job of depicting the chaotic yet thrilling world of filmmaking. It explores the challenges faced by crew members, from the temperamental sound designer to the rights of an overconfident actor. The humor in the first half helps maintain a brisk pace, making the audience laugh while also reflecting on the pressures of the industry.
Aashaan’s dream comes close within reach when KRS offers him a minor acting role. Yet, complications arise as his eagerness is overshadowed by harsh realities. One memorable scene captures Aashaan practicing his single line, “It was raining outside.” Indrans’ portrayal brings a touching nuance to the character, showcasing the struggles of a novice actor.
However, the movie doesn’t fully explore its many intriguing themes. In the latter half, a twist leads both men to create a film together. While this part of the story shows promise, some elements feel rushed. How could Anandan produce a film that’s ready for a festival screening so quickly? The pacing leaves viewers questioning the authenticity of their journey.
In sum, Aashaan offers a warm look at dreams, friendship, and the trials of the film industry. It’s filled with genuine moments that tug at the heartstrings but sometimes glosses over deeper storytelling opportunities. Despite some flaws, the film’s sincerity stands out, making it a worthwhile watch.
