In Downtown Phoenix, Larry “Lo-Lo” White isn’t just a restaurateur; he’s a local legend. Known for Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles and Monroe’s Hot Chicken, Larry’s impact goes beyond delicious food. It all began with his grandmother, who opened Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café in 1964. That café has been serving hearty, home-cooked meals in the same spot for over sixty years.
As a child, Larry worked alongside his grandmother, soaking up recipes and wisdom that shaped his love for cooking. He fondly recalls his days running through Downtown Phoenix, from department stores to soda counters, which sparked his passion for food. This journey led him to launch his first pop-up restaurant in 1997, turning into what we know today as Lo-Lo’s, famous for its mouthwatering fried chicken and waffles.
Nearly two decades later, he added Monroe’s Hot Chicken to the mix, introducing a taste of Nashville with spicy chicken dishes. This evolution reflects the growing culinary diversity in Downtown Phoenix, which has become a hotspot for food lovers.
We had a chance to chat with Larry to uncover the inspiration behind his restaurants and his vision of community. According to him, “I needed a future. Entrepreneurship was always part of my life.” His journey is a testament to resilience—he saw opportunities where others saw challenges.
For Larry, Downtown Phoenix is more than a business hub; it’s a vibrant community. He envisions his restaurants as places for people to gather and enjoy great meals before heading to games or events. He says, “People can grab a hearty meal and still make it on time, whether they’re stopping by before a Suns game or a concert.”
Reflecting on his childhood memories, Larry shares, “I rode the Tico bus from Mrs. White’s to the Woolworth store, where I’d enjoy root beer floats. I want to recreate that experience for today’s community.” He aims to offer diverse meals you can enjoy on the go, just as he did, fostering a sense of nostalgia and connection.
As for his legacy, Larry hopes people remember the quality and care behind his food. “We put our heart into everything. Our chicken is fresh, halal, and antibiotic-free. Here, you get an amazing chicken sandwich, no shortcuts.” This commitment to quality has earned him loyal customers who appreciate his attention to detail.
