SANTA FE, N.M. — Actor Timothy Busfield, known for his roles in “The West Wing” and “Field of Dreams,” has been indicted on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child under age 13. New Mexico prosecutors shared the news on Friday.
These allegations stem from Busfield’s time as a director on the TV series “The Cleaning Lady” from 2022 to 2024. He has strongly denied any wrongdoing, with his attorney stating that they will contest the charges at every opportunity.
While the grand jury indictment clears the way for a trial without requiring a preliminary hearing, Busfield has faced legal troubles before. He turned himself in earlier this year on related charges but was released after a judge found no previous similar allegations against him.
Busfield’s attorney, Larry Stein, noted that the grand jury did not support prosecution attempts to include grooming charges, calling out flaws in the state’s case and claiming the evidence lacks consistency.
The initial complaint alleges that a boy reported inappropriate touching by Busfield when he was just 7, with the behavior continuing until he was 8. The boy’s twin also indicated he experienced similar incidents but had not spoken up regarding them initially.
Assistant District Attorney Savannah Brandenburg-Koch stands firm on the strength of the case, citing medical findings and insights from the boys’ therapist. Witnesses have reportedly expressed fear of retaliation, further complicating the narrative.
Each count against Busfield carries a potential six-year prison sentence, which could increase if found guilty of sexual offenses. This case raises important discussions about safety in the entertainment industry, especially for vulnerable minors working in film and television.
Historically, high-profile figures in Hollywood have faced similar accusations. The #MeToo movement sparked significant changes in how such allegations are approached, emphasizing the need for accountability in power dynamics.
User reactions on social media reveal a mix of shock and support for victims, highlighting society’s growing awareness of these issues. As the case unfolds, many will be closely monitoring its developments, hoping for justice and safety for everyone involved.
