The Community FoodBank of New Jersey has made a significant update to its services. With $105,000 from the state’s Department of Agriculture and the Office of the Food Security Advocate, they’ve installed food lockers at their Southern Branch in Egg Harbor Township.
These lockers consist of both refrigerator and freezer options. Registered users can access their food orders 24/7, allowing them to pick up items at their convenience. This is especially beneficial for those who may work long hours or have other commitments during traditional pantry hours. As director Stefanik noted, “If they have to stop in at 11 p.m. or just before work, the lockers are available.”
The program began last October with 50 households as a pilot. Now, they’re set to expand this access to another 150 households. Cape May County residents can apply to use these handy lockers. This model not only offers convenience but also empowers users to choose their food items, reducing waste—a concern many food banks face.
Currently, the traditional food bank remains open on weekdays and Saturdays, serving around 800 pantries statewide, including about 100 in southern New Jersey. Such services are vital, considering recent statistics show that food insecurity affects over 10% of residents in the U.S.
Public reactions have been positive, with many praising the 24-hour access. This initiative aligns with a growing trend towards flexible support systems in food assistance.
