MILWAUKEE – The Marquette women’s basketball team is on a roll with a five-game winning streak. This weekend, they’re set to face Creighton, aiming for their first season sweep of the Bluejays since 2021.
The game is set for noon CT on Sunday at D.J. Sokol Arena. Elise Woodward and Kim Adams will be calling the game for FS1.
Team Highlights
Marquette has made a remarkable turnaround since mid-January, focusing on solid defense. In their last five games, they’ve kept four opponents under 61 points. Even when they faced DePaul, who typically scores high, Marquette managed to limit their shooting to 35.9%.
The team’s offense is also thriving. They’ve maintained a shooting percentage above 50% in their last four games. Overall, they sit 22nd in the nation for field goal percentage at 46.5%.
A key player, Halle Vice, has bounced back after an injury. She scored 23 points against Butler and has achieved three double-doubles in her last three games, leading the BIG EAST with ten double-doubles this season.
Lee Volker is another standout, averaging 15 points over the last seven games. Her sharp shooting from the three-point line, hitting 50% of her attempts, has been crucial.
Marquette’s strength lies in its experience. They are the only Division I women’s team to have all players return from last season.
Stats at a Glance
- Marquette shot 55.2% in their last four games, with a high of 64.4% against DePaul.
- Skylar Forbes returned to form with a solid 22 points against Providence after struggling in previous games.
- Halle Vice’s double-double total is impressive, with her reaching this milestone ten times already.
Facing Off with Creighton
This matchup will be the 35th time Marquette and Creighton meet. Creighton leads the series 19-15, but Marquette won the first game this season convincingly, 67-49.
Defensive Dominance
Marquette’s defense has been especially strong on the road, holding five opponents to 60 points or less in BIG EAST play. Excluding a high-scoring game against UConn, they limit teams to just 57.7 points per game away from home.
The Free-Throw Factor
Marquette also excels at the free-throw line, shooting 77.7%, ranking 18th in the NCAA this season. They’ve achieved 80% or better on 10 occasions, though their attempts per game rank low at 338th out of 359 teams.
Key Players to Watch
Halle Vice, with her ten double-doubles, continues to shine despite injury setbacks. She is reminiscent of Erika Davenport’s streak from 2019, showcasing the growth of the program.
Skylar Forbes is making waves too, ranking well in both blocks and three-point shooting. She’s the only player averaging 1.9 blocks per game while also hitting over 37% from beyond the arc.
Lee Volker has stepped up her three-point shooting this season to 43.9%, placing her among the best in the NCAA.
This team dynamic, with experienced and talented players, makes Marquette a formidable opponent. As they prepare to face Creighton, they look to build on their current momentum and continue to rack up victories.
