Thrissur: For Pepita Seth, Kerala has always been more than just a place to visit; it has been her home. Recently, at the Thrissur Collectorate, she became an Indian citizen at the age of 80, formally renouncing her British nationality. District Collector Arjun Pandyan presented her citizenship documents during a heartfelt ceremony.
“I’m thrilled that this land I love has accepted me,” Pepita shared, reflecting on her deep bond with Kerala.
As a photographer, writer, and cultural researcher, Pepita has spent over 40 years capturing Kerala’s rich traditions, from its vibrant temple festivals to its majestic elephants. Her journey started in London, where she discovered family diaries that ignited her curiosity about India. She moved to Kerala at 27, drawn by its cultural depth.
Thrissur, known as Kerala’s cultural hub, soon became her life’s focus. Pepita immersed herself in local traditions like Theyyam ceremonies and the unique matrilineal system of the region. Her insights and respect for the local culture have made her a beloved figure in Kerala.
In 1981, she became one of the few foreigners to study the sacred rituals at Guruvayur Temple, gaining rare access to its inner workings. Her iconic photograph of Guruvayur Kesavan, an elephant in musth, brought her international acclaim. This work led to her book, “Heaven on Earth: The Universe of Kerala’s Guruvayur Temple,” which continues to be a key reference on the temple’s spiritual community.
Pepita’s contributions to art and culture earned her the Padma Shri award in 2012. She honored the occasion by gifting one of her books, “In God’s Mirror: The Theyyams of Malabar,” to the District Collector, further solidifying her legacy.
With her unique perspective as a foreigner deeply embedded in local culture, Pepita Seth’s journey showcases the power of passion and understanding. Her story reminds us that home is not just a place, but a connection formed through love and respect for a culture.
