Residents of drought-hit Loima Sub-County in Turkana are facing a tough reality. Many are leaving their homes, seeking better conditions in neighboring countries like Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. This drought has caused severe hardships, leaving many villages deserted as families search for food and water sources.
During a recent visit, we saw abandoned manyattas in Nakitokirion village. According to local reports, about 75% of the county’s 1.3 million people are affected by this ongoing crisis. Chief Robert Epur Ikoel noted that livestock deaths are already happening due to the extreme conditions. He’s worried the situation may worsen by March if action isn’t taken soon.
In the chief’s location, eight villages are particularly hard hit, including Lomil and Akatorongot. “Animals are dying, which is devastating for communities that rely on them for survival,” he said. This dire situation may also lead to increased conflicts over dwindling resources as communities compete for what little remains.
The Kenya Red Cross Society is stepping in to help. They are providing emergency nutritional aid and medical support to those in need.
According to a study from the United Nations, climate events like prolonged droughts are becoming more frequent, impacting food security globally. More than 820 million people worldwide suffer from chronic hunger, a number that is expected to grow as climate change worsens.
Experts stress the importance of sustainable practices to address these challenges. Enhanced water management and support for pastoralist communities can play a crucial role in mitigating the impact of such environmental crises.
