Urbana, Ill. – In a fierce quarterfinal clash at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the No. 6 Oklahoma women’s tennis team fell 4-2 to No. 2 Texas A&M. This match marked a tough battle for the Sooners at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Oklahoma kicked off strong, clinching the doubles point for the ninth time this spring. Laura Brunkel and Oyinlomo Quadre set the tone with a quick 6-2 win on court three against Lexington Reed and Daria Smetannikov. Texas A&M countered with a close 7-5 victory from Mia Kupres and Lucciana Perez over Roisin Gilheany and Evialina Laskevich. In a nail-biter, Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang secured the doubles point for Oklahoma with a hard-fought 7-5 win over Violeta Martinez and Anna Perelman. This victory improved their partnership record to 7-0 this season.
As singles play began, Texas A&M rallied back. Lexington Reed defeated No. 123 Chloé Noël 6-3, 6-3 on court three, while Daria Smetannikov took down Ounmuang 6-1, 6-3 on court five. Lucciana Perez, ranked No. 41, secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory against No. 12 Julia Garcia Ruiz, giving Texas A&M a commanding 3-1 lead.
Oklahoma found some hope on court four, where Edda Mamedova clinched a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Violeta Martinez. However, the Aggies sealed their victory when Anna Perelman triumphed over Quadre in a tough three-set match, finishing 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The match on court one between No. 46 Kupres and Laskevich was left unfinished, with Laskevich leading 4-3 in the third set after splitting the first two sets.
Looking ahead, Oklahoma will continue in the consolation round on Sunday against the loser of the match between No. 3 North Carolina and No. 10 Ohio State.
