NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — On Saturday, hundreds of families gathered at a local parking lot to receive free groceries. This community food giveaway aimed to help ease the burden of rising living costs.
The event was a collaboration between the city, 99 Jamz, South Promo, and other groups, with a mission to support at least 500 families. Shawn Reilly, who came for groceries, shared, “I live with my in-laws, just trying to make ends meet.”
Organizers emphasized that this effort was more than just about food; it was about uniting the community. DJ Nasty, a key organizer, explained, “We always want to bring the community together.” He noted the growing need for such initiatives, especially as prices rise.
Food prices have soared, with statistics showing some grocery items up over 15% compared to last year. DJ Nasty remarked, “Everything is just high. Providing relief in these times feels amazing.”
In South Florida, living costs are over 20% higher than the national average. For many attendees, the groceries offered essential help. Kristen Olmo, a mother of five, stated, “Times are tough. This helps us a lot.”
For Reilly, receiving the food was deeply meaningful. “It means the world to me,” he said, battling back emotions.
In recent surveys, about 70% of families report struggling to afford groceries. Events like this highlight the community’s efforts to support each other and ensure that no one is left behind.
