Belmont Women’s Tennis Faces Tough Loss Against Austin Peay
This past Sunday, the Belmont women’s tennis team faced off against Austin Peay in Evansville, Indiana, and unfortunately, they fell 7-0. Despite their defeat, there were moments of resilience worth noting.
In doubles, Belmont showcased some talent. The duo of Cielo Tapia-Cruz and Mia Jones managed a strong 6-4 victory at the No. 2 doubles position. However, the team lost a close tiebreaker in the top doubles match, allowing Austin Peay to secure the first point.
Individually, redshirt freshman Savannah Webster and graduate student Cielo Tapia-Cruz battled hard in singles. Webster won her first set 6-3 against Sophia Baranov but couldn’t hold on in the next sets, losing 6-4 and then the super tiebreaker 10-4. Tapia-Cruz also showed her fighting spirit, losing the first set 6-4, then bouncing back to win the second set 6-3, before narrowly losing the tiebreak 10-6 against Luca Bohlen.
Looking ahead, Belmont will host Southeast Missouri and North Alabama at the Ensworth Tennis Center next weekend. The match against Southeast Missouri starts at 5:30 PM on Friday, followed by a 12:30 PM match against North Alabama on Saturday.
Fans can keep up with the team on social media and through the Belmont Bruins app for real-time updates and highlights.
This match reminds us that even when the outcome isn’t what we hoped for, the effort and determination shown by the players are commendable. They’ll be back on their home courts soon, bringing their best to the next matches.
