Trial Update on Devon Horton
Devon Horton, the former District 65 Superintendent, faces serious allegations of embezzlement—17 counts to be exact. Recently, Daily Reporter Emily Dissanayake shared insights about the ongoing case. Right now, the focus is on setting a trial date. There’s talk about a date in fall 2026, but nothing is confirmed yet. Emily noted the unusual pace of court proceedings, where setting a date can take a lot longer than expected.
Halal Food at Northwestern
On the dining front, Northwestern has introduced its first certified halal food station at the Foster-Walker Dining Commons. Isabella Jacob, our Diversity & Inclusion Chair, explained that halal food meets specific Islamic dietary laws. This move comes after complaints about mislabeled halal foods and cross-contamination issues last year. Two students from the Muslim Cultural Association and ASG took the lead in pushing for this change, addressing past concerns directly with the administration.
The goal is to make halal food more accessible on campus. Compass Group, the university’s dining partner, is looking to expand this program, aiming for another halal station on the north side of campus.
The Mee-Ow Show’s New Chapter
The Mee-Ow group recently held its first independent show called “Time Mee-Owchine.” Samantha Monje, who covered the event, said it was an excellent experience, marking a significant moment for the group after being under a larger theater board for decades. She described the laughter and energy of the crowd, with one of the standout skits featuring a humorous take on a pageant contestant named Biscuit.
