Comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) is an intriguing celestial object that tells a dramatic story. Discovered in May 2025 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), this comet was observed breaking apart by the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii in late 2025. Located about 220 million miles away in the constellation Pisces, it came closest to the sun on October 8, 2025, at just 31 million miles away.

As comets approach the sun, they face intense heat, often causing them to break apart. This happened to K1, which started breaking up in early November due to solar heating. This phenomenon is common, where jets of gas and dust, known as outgassing, weaken the comet’s structure. Surprising many, K1 emerged from its solar encounter intact but didn’t shine bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. Telescopes worldwide captured its spectacular breakup, revealing three distinct fragments.

Interestingly, the breakup of K1 highlights a greater trend in astrophysics. According to NASA studies, approximately 40% of comets exhibit disintegration when they come close to the sun. This data aligns with historical observations, showing that many comets meet their fate in similar ways. The journey of K1 isn’t over yet. Another comet, C/2026 A1 (MAPS), discovered on January 13, 2026, is on a collision course with the sun. It will make a close pass on April 4, at just 465,000 miles from the sun’s surface. If it survives, astronomers anticipate it could shine at a magnitude of -4, making it visible even in daylight, comparable to the brightness of Venus.
