Indian refiners are stepping away from Russian crude oil for deliveries in April. This shift could help New Delhi lock in a trade deal with the United States. Recent talks between the two nations have focused on reducing tariffs and enhancing economic cooperation.
Major companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Reliance Industries are halting new purchases of Russian oil for March and April. Some shipments for March were already arranged, but the trend shows that many refiners are minimizing their Russian crude imports.
Former President Donald Trump noted during trade discussions that India had “committed to stop directly or indirectly” buying Russian oil. His administration had previously placed tariffs on Indian goods because of oil imports from Russia, which he later lifted.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement from India about a ban on Russian oil, the actions of these refiners suggest a clear change in buying strategies. India is the third-largest oil consumer globally, and after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it became a significant buyer of discounted Russian oil. However, imports have dropped from over 2 million barrels per day at a peak to about 500,000–600,000 barrels per day projected for March.
Some refiners, like Nayara Energy, which depends on Russian crude for its 400,000-barrel-per-day refinery, may still make limited purchases. Future guidance from the government may further shape these buying decisions.
This reduction in Russian oil purchases reflects India’s aim to diversify its energy sources while ensuring energy security. It also aligns with broader geopolitical and economic strategies as the country navigates its relationship with the U.S.
