Exciting News: Nexon Develops New StarCraft Shooter in Collaboration with Blizzard!

Blizzard is reportedly teaming up with Nexon, a major gaming company in South Korea, to create a new shooter based on the StarCraft series. Although Blizzard hasn’t confirmed this yet, The Korea Economic Daily, a respected business newspaper, has details about the project. They mention that Nexon has a dedicated team working on it, led by a modder known for creating StarCraft content.

Blizzard has always wanted to expand the StarCraft universe into different genres. Nexon has had some success in the shooter market, especially with its studio, Embark, which developed games like The Finals and Arc Raiders.

However, there is some hesitation about this new endeavor. Nexon has faced challenges in the past, like when a partnership with Square Enix to work on a Final Fantasy game didn’t progress. Similarly, there have been issues with Blizzard’s own attempts to create StarCraft-based shooters.

One notable effort was StarCraft Ghost, announced in 2002. It was supposed to be a tactical action game but was ultimately canceled in 2006 after multiple delays. Another project, known as Ares, was scrapped in 2019 to allow Blizzard to focus on other titles like Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. Reports suggested Ares would resemble Battlefield but, like Ghost, it never saw the light of day.

In 2024, journalist Jason Schreier revealed that there was yet another StarCraft shooter in development, led by Dan Hay, a former executive producer from the Far Cry series. This raises questions: Is Nexon’s game the same as what Hay was working on, or is it a different project altogether? Given that Hay’s initiative had reportedly been underway for two years, while Nexon’s seems more recent, it’s hard to say.

User reactions on social media show a mix of excitement and skepticism. Gamers are eager to see a fresh take on StarCraft, yet many remember the disappointments of past projects.

For those keen on gaming trends, it’s worth noting that shooter games have increasingly dominated the market. According to a recent report from Newzoo, the global shooter market is expected to reach $23.5 billion by 2025. This booming interest might just provide the fertile ground needed for a successful StarCraft shooter.

While the future of this project remains uncertain, the partnership between Blizzard and Nexon could spark a new chapter in the beloved StarCraft legacy.
